I love secondhand shops. There’s no telling what you will find and there is most often a bargain to be had.
Finding such places, especially in rural northeast Ohio, can be a challenge. Unlike big corporate retailers, secondhand shops and thrift stores rarely advertise. They are not always known to those who don’t live in their immediate neighborhood. Making a list seems the best way to keep track of the places I know well and those I have only heard about and have yet to visit. If you live in Ohio’s northeast corner, you will see that this list will take you on excursions in many different directions. I expect the list to grow as I come upon more intriguing shops.
Descriptions are from shop owner’s websites. Comments in italics are from published reviews. Comments in red italics are my own thoughts. Shops and hours change. Check opening days/hours before you go.
Madison /Perry
Goodwill Madison, 6595 N Ridge Rd, Madison, OH 44057; Mon – Sat 9-7, Sun 10-6. This store has made many improvements since moving in. Worth stopping if you are in the area but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get here.
The Future Past, 8 W Main St, Madison, OH 44057. Small but cute secondhand shop in Madison Village carries upcycled decor.

Small Town Consignment & Co-Op, 7230A N Ridge Rd, Madison, OH 44057. Sat 10-4, Sun 1-4. Furniture, linen, jewelry and gifts; Weekdays (By appointment). “Always pleasant people, new finds every visit! Have bought everything from furniture to wall decor to knick knacks!”

Unionville
The Green Door and The Red Button Antiques Store, 6891 South Ridge Road, Unionville, OH 44088. Open daily noon-6; My favorite antiques store just for its ambiance. Specializes in Coca Cola memorabilia. Lots of other things too. Prices are a bit steep – antique store pricing as expected and not “thrift” pricing, but the selection of items is nice. The building, and houses in this little crossroads called Unionville, are historic and interesting to look at.
Geneva
The Painted Shutter, 907 E Main St, Geneva, OH 44041; Closed Sunday Mon – Sat: 10 – 2; Typical “junk” store with good prices plus a local artist’s original art. Stop if you are in the area. *Located across the street from the seasonal “Catherine’s Christmas Shop.”
Geneva Gift Shop (also GLS Auto Sales), 745 E Main St #1, Geneva, OH 44041; Just down the street from the Painted Shutter and the seasonal Catherine’s Christmas. This shop does not have much of a sign so I’m not even sure if the shop has a name. I drove past it for years, never really knowing what was inside. When I finally did explore it, I found it filled with a lot of furniture and wonderful vintage items, all very reasonably priced!

Some items are way over-priced (for example, dishes that I could buy on Ebay for half the cost). But many bargains as well. They do have a large selection of items. Worth a “look see.” CLOSED

Fat Sally’s Warehouse, 1569 Laird Dr, Ashtabula, OH 44004; Monday &\Tuesday & Wednesday CLOSED, Thursday, Friday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Sunday 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Made my first visit here a few weeks ago. Nicely organized. Prices were reasonable. It’s a little too tidy for me. It’s a fairly new shop though and I hope they will continue to keep adding merchandise to fill out or rather “pack it in.” Thrift stores in my opinion should be a little messy!

Peddlers Corner Resale Shoppe, 12394 Kinsman Rd, Newbury Township, OH 44065. Visited March 2022—This place needs organization. It goes on and on and a few rooms are filled with treasures priced and ready to buy, but for the rest of the place, if they have what you want you will never find it among the piles of unopened boxes and display cases that can’t be reached because of blocked aisles. If you are willing to dig, go for it. It would make for some fun discovery. Prices are up and down. I bought a vintage cookbook for a reasonable $2. I passed on a gardening book that was overpriced at $7.50.

Farley’s Country Store, 12391 Mayfield Rd, Chardon, OH 44024. Daily 11 – 5. Visited March 2022– Small shop filled with crafted home and garden décor. Candles, paintings on wood mostly of barnyard creatures, bird houses, décor made from scrap wood, etc.
For a meal in the Chardon area my favorite spot is Bass Lake Tavern 426 South St, Chardon, OH 44024
Andover/Kinsman
SAPS This & That 20 US-6, Andover, OH 44003; Mon – Sat 9-6 Sun 9-4 Small store that carries odds and ends of what appear to be new merchandise close outs. Wouldn’t make a trip just for this store but if I’m in town, it’s worth a stop. I usually find something.
Andover Flea Market, 6352 Marvin Rd, Andover, OH 44003 Friday – Sunday 6 am – 3 pm This place has been going for years and I’m surprised to say I’ve never been there. Popular place however that I will one day get to!
Kinsman Market Square, 6416 Kinsman Nickerson Rd, Kinsman, OH 44428 Daily 10 – 8 The ultimate “junk store.” Packed with so many things! Thousands of books and a great place to buy heavily discounted discontinued wallpaper if you need one to a half dozen double rolls. Odds and ends, antique dishes, Christmas décor, tools, household goods of every kind. You will either love this place or hate it. It is an old, ramshackled building that will undoubtedly let you know what decades old dust smells like. I could spend hours exploring the basement.

It has the best selection and some of the highest quality pieces in the area. The variety of objects is staggering. Pricing varies. Some items on the high side. I always come out with something.”
