Ohio Day Trips: Christmas Shops and Events

From my private collection.

Christmas shops tend to be seasonal so check opening days/hours before you go.

Geneva/Ashtabula, Ohio

Catherine’s Christmas (seasonal) 910 E Main St, Geneva, OH 44041. Now open for the 2023 season! A beautiful Christmas shop inside an old house. Worth the drive even if you don’t live in the area. When you finish here, continue east on Rt. 20 to Christmas World.

Christmas World (seasonal) 1760 W. Prospect, Ashtabula OH 44004; A large Christmas shop that lacks the charm of Catherine’s but makes up for it by offering a huge inventory of Christmas décor. A drive-thru lighting display.

Geneva Christmas Parade Downtown. Friday, Dec. 1, 2023 at 7 p.m.

Come join the village of Geneva-on-the-Lake for a small town Christmas! For the first two weekends of December, the village will come alive with Christmas cheer and holiday activities. Holiday pop up shops will be open for Christmas shopping and the restaurants & bars will be fully decorated and offering seasonal specials.

Stick around after dark to see…. Lights on the Lake, Lakeshore Park, Lakeshore Dr, Ashtabula, OH 44004.

Order tickets early for performances of The Nutcracker at the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th Street, Ashtabula. 440-964-3396. This excellent production has been playing each December for years and is an annual holiday favorite for many area families.

Painesville/Mentor

Bremec Garden Center of Concord, 7954 Painesville Ravenna Rd, Painesville, OH44077. Traveler’s review: “What an incredible Christmas shop!”

Petitti’s Garden Center, 8000 Plaza Boulevard, Mentor, OH 44060. Petitti’s Garden Centers all over NEOhio turn into Christmas shops this time of year.

Western Pennsylvania

Kraynaks Christmas World (seasonal – garden center during other months) 2525 E State St, Hermitage, PA 16148; Now open for the 2023 season! It’s a bit of a drive from NEOhio but if you love Christmas shops it’s worth the trip. Walk through displays, Christmas décor shop, and a toy store right on the premises. We make an annual visit. Best to visit on a weekday and early in the holiday season because once Thanksgiving hits the line for the walk-through display will sometimes wind out the door and into the parking lot.

Faye’s Christmas Village 7781 US-219, Brockway, PA 15824. No info. Just a listing I found so take your chances and then let me know how you like it!

Cleveland Area

A Christmas Story House and Gift Shop 3166 W 11th St, Cleveland, OH 44109; The house from the movie just as Ralphie remembers it.

Cleveland Botanical Garden, 11030 East Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44106. Many botanical gardens will have holiday displays. Cleveland’s is always worth a visit. This year they are producing “Frost.” Order tickets online. From their website: “Our  indoor and outdoor gardens transform with towering ice arches, dazzling light installations, a tunnel of flowers, larger-than-life animals, more than 500 poinsettias, seasonal soundscapes and much more to create a completely immersive new world for the holiday season.

Kringle’s Inventionasium Experience, 230 W Huron Rd #7294, Cleveland, OH 44113. From a traveler’s review: “Address for self parking lot is 801 Canal Street. Follow the signs for the shops and take the elevator up to concourse 1. From there walk past the escalators to the back of the mall and you will find it.” This looks like a good one for kids. It is supposed to take about an hour.

WILD WINTER LIGHTS PRESENTED BY NOPEC (Cleveland Metroparks Zoo) 3900 WILDLIFE WAY, CLEVELAND OH 44109. Starting November 15th. 5:30-10:30. From their website: “Wild Winter Lights presented by NOPEC features more than one million lights across holiday-themed areas including Enchanted Forest and Santa’s Workshop, where guests can take photos with Santa Claus. For the first time ever, two dynamic musical light shows will be featured including an enchanting 50-foot tree as well as a show directly on Waterfowl Lake.”

Medina, OH.

Medina is a great shopping town any time of year. “You can also take part in several candlelight walks. The City of Medina and A.I. Root Candle Company will host the 38th annual Medina Candlelight Walk on November 17th – 19th around Medina square. This three-day affair annually attracts up to 40,000 people and includes holiday light displays, the lighting of the Christmas tree in Medina’s lovely gazebo, fireworks, a parade, and much more.”

Castle Noel 260 S Court St, Medina, OH 44256. Something for everyone in the family. See vintage toy displays, Hollywood costumes, NYC store windows and even take a ride down Ralphie’s department store slide! This is a difficult tour to describe. It’s a bit pricey but if it’s the sort of thing you like– you’ll love it! Make reservations!

Amish Country

Head to Amish country where you will find more great shops than you will be able to check out in a day.

Tis the Season 4363 OH-39, Millersburg, OH 44654; Mon – Sat 10-6 Sunday Closed; Located in Amish Country, this is Ohio’s largest Christmas shop and it is spectacular! I visit annually and it is well worth the drive. With so much to see, you’ll want to spend a couple of hours at least! Make a weekend of it and visit the many other gift shops and specialty stores in the area.

You won’t want to miss… Lehman’s Hardware 4779 Kidron Rd, Kidron, OH 44618; So much more than a hardware store!

Pine Tree Barn, 4374 Shreve Rd, Wooster, OH 44691. Never been but sounds like a good one to check out.

Columbiana, OH

The Joy of Christmas Light Show in Columbiana goes beyond sparkling displays. You can indulge in Christmas cookies, hot cocoa, and other treats hosted by local non-profits at Santa’s Ice Castle. Have your picture taken with Santa. Visit the Gingerbread House where you can see a selection of decorated gingerbread houses.

Youngstown Area

Tudor Octagon 3567 Bradley Brownlee Rd, Cortland, OH 44410; I’ve never heard of this place but it sounds interesting! Traveler’s review: “Really love this place, very friendly environment have a little bit of everything for your holiday needs!

Oglebay, Wheeling, WV

Nice shops. Drive through evening light display is a favorite that brings tourists in by the car load.

Cambridge, OH

Life size Dicken’s Village. Scenes can be seen throughout the town. An evening light show is held downtown each evening during the holiday season.

Nearby: White Pillars Christmas Shop, 7405 E Pike, Norwich, OH 43767 I visited this holiday store a few years ago. It a large house filled with everything Christmas.

Roscoe Village

600 N.Whitewoman St., Coshocton, OH 43812. Life in a historic canal town at Christmas. Browse the shops. Check out the museum. Annual events include an evening candle lighting.

Central Ohio

Baker’s Village Garden Center & Gift Shoppe 9267 Dublin Rd, Powell, OH 43065; Requires an overnight stay for those of us in the NE corner but this is a fabulous shop at Christmas and the rest of the year it is a garden center.

Morgan House Gift Shop (and restaurant) 5300 Glick Rd, Dublin, OH 43017; I discovered this fabulous gift shop waiting for a restaurant table. Close to Bakers listed above.

Franklin Park Conservatory, 1777 E Broad St, Columbus, OH 43203. Ticket reservations are available now for Conservatory Aglow! Gardens and interior biomes transform into a holiday wonderland.

Christmas Warehouse 255 Cedar Hill Rd, Lancaster, OH 43130 Traveler’s review: “Wonderful little store.

Timbuk Garden Mart & Timbuk Farms 2030 Timbuk Rd, Granville, OH 43023; Traveler’s review: “The farm continues to be one of Central Ohio’s oldest and largest Christmas tree farms. Timbuk Lodge with Santa and Mrs. Claus, fireplace and cafe, and much more. “

Yellow Springs, OH

Fun and funky shopping spot any time of year.

Clifton Mill Holiday Lights, Yellow Springs, OH 45387. A great place to have lunch too! From their website: “The Historic Clifton Mill Legendary Christmas Light Display starts the day after Thanksgiving and continues through New Year’s Eve. Lights come on at 6 pm and off at 9:30 pm. Four million lights decorate the mill, gorge, falls and the grounds; a fantastic collection of over 3000 Santa Clauses; an outdoor miniature village includes replicas of a train station, moving light parade, diner, drive-in-movie, and The Ohio State University marching band; check out the live Santa tinkering in his workshop and going up the chimney every half hour; enjoy the musical covered bridge light show every hour on the hour. The Legendary Christmas Light Display will certainly get you in the Christmas spirit!!”

Southwest Ohio

Christmas Ranch 3205 S Waynesville Rd, Morrow, OH 45152; This popular family fun attraction features a million dancing Christmas lights synchronized to holiday music, Christmas shops, pictures with Santa, wagon and train rides and hot food and drinks. A splendid holiday tradition that visitors of all ages are enchanted by.

Overly’s Country Christmas 116 Blue Ribbon Ln, Greensburg, PA 15601; Light display: Travelers Review: “It was such a wonderful experience with the family. The lights were beautiful. You can choose to drive through to see the lights and leave and or see the lights park and get out and walk around which I recommend. There was a train kids could ride. Take a picture with Santa. There was a gift shop and candy store. A stand that sold funnel cakes, deep fried oreos, and cheese fries and more. There was a fire going near a little playset for kids and a sandbox to play in. They also have a carriage ride you can go on. So much to enjoy!

Lebanon, OH.

This is a great shopping town in southern Ohio. If staying overnight, check out the historic Golden Lamb restaurant and hotel. From Ohio Girl Travels: “Lebanon is full of holiday cheer that you and your family will love.
