These cookies may look rather plain but looks can be deceiving. These puffy, sugar coated rounds are packed with flavor. I bake them throughout the year as a special cookie jar treat.

Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Cookies

  • 1/2 cup shortening (part butter or margarine)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • one egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Heat oven to 425°. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla thoroughly. Blend dry ingredients; add to sugar mixture alternately with sour cream. Divide dough; roll out to ¼” thick on a well floured pastry cloth. Cut with a 2 inch round cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle tops with sugar. Bake 8 to 10 min. or until lightly browned. Makes 4 to 5 dozen 2 inch cookies.
